Question 1

What is the Evolution of Geographical Thought in the pre-Greco-Roman world?

Accepted Answer

The Evolution of Geographical Thought in the pre-Greco-Roman world refers to the development of spatial knowledge, mapping, and environmental understanding in ancient civilizations — Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, and India — before Greek systematization. These societies created practical geographies for irrigation, administration, navigation, and cosmology.

Question 2

Which civilization produced the earliest known world map?

Accepted Answer

The Babylonian Imago Mundi (c. 600 BCE), a clay tablet depicting the world as a disk surrounded by ocean, is the oldest surviving world map. Earlier Mesopotamian cadastral maps (c. 2300 BCE) show field-level surveying.

Question 3

How did Chinese geography differ from Greek geography?

Accepted Answer

Chinese geography integrated feng shui cosmology, grid-based cartography (Pei Xiu's six principles), and magnetic direction-finding into a holistic system. Greek geography, by contrast, pursued mathematical modeling (Eratosthenes, Ptolemy) and descriptive regional accounts (Herodotus, Strabo) as separate intellectual projects.
