Question 1

What is the primary geological process behind the Eastern Ghats formation?

Accepted Answer

The Eastern Ghats formation resulted from multiple tectonothermal events spanning the Archean to Neoproterozoic, primarily driven by the collision of the Indian Plate with the East Antarctic Craton during Rodinia's assembly, followed by reactivation during Gondwana breakup. This produced high-grade metamorphism (khondalite, charnockite) and block-faulted topography.

Question 2

How do the Eastern Ghats differ from the Western Ghats in terms of origin?

Accepted Answer

The Eastern Ghats are ancient metamorphic mountains (>2.5 Ga) formed by tectonic collision and crustal deformation, while the Western Ghats are relatively young (~65 Ma) fault-block mountains associated with Deccan Traps volcanism and the Indian Plate's separation from Madagascar.

Question 3

Which are the major minerals found in the Eastern Ghats region?

Accepted Answer

The Eastern Ghats host world-class deposits of bauxite (Panchpatmali, Niyamgiri), high-grade iron ore (Badampahar, Daitari), manganese (Vizianagaram, Bonai-Keonjhar), graphite (khondalite-hosted), and emerging rare earth element potential in coastal placers and carbonatites.
