Question 1

What are the major paradigms in the evolution of geography?

Accepted Answer

The major paradigms include: (1) Ancient/Classical descriptive geography (Greeks, Romans, Islamic scholars), (2) Age of Discovery & Scientific Revolution (empirical cartography), (3) 19th-century Regional Geography (Humboldt, Ritter, determinism vs. possibilism), (4) Quantitative Revolution (1950s–70s, spatial science, models), (5) Critical/Humanistic/Postmodern turns (1970s onward, Marxist, feminist, poststructural), and (6) Contemporary Digital Geography (GIS, remote sensing, big data, Anthropocene studies).

Question 2

Why is the evolution of geographical thought important for UPSC/IAS preparation?

Accepted Answer

Geographical Thought is a core component of UPSC Geography Optional Paper II and UGC NET Geography. Examiners test understanding of paradigm shifts, key dichotomies (determinism/possibilism, systematic/regional), contributions of major geographers (Humboldt, Vidal, Hartshorne, Harvey), and the ability to critically evaluate each school's strengths and limitations. Historical context enables aspirants to frame contemporary issues (climate change, urbanization) within theoretical debates.

Question 3

How did the Quantitative Revolution change geography?

Accepted Answer

The Quantitative Revolution (1950s–1970s) transformed geography from an idiographic, descriptive discipline into a nomothetic, law-seeking spatial science. Led by Schaefer, Bunge, Haggett, and Berry, it introduced statistical techniques, gravity models, central place theory, location-allocation models, and computer-based spatial analysis. This shift established geography's scientific credibility but later faced critique for ignoring human agency, meaning, and power relations—spawning the critical and humanistic turns.
